This project involved the refurbishment, reconfiguration and extension of an existing 1960’s, three storey college building creating an activity centre for college students and staff as a social space and an open learning environment to enhance collaboration and interaction.
A new extended ground floor, full height glazing at ground floor and extensive over-cladding and large open plan environment has transformed the building, increasing daylight and improving functionality, creating enough space to fully achieve the clients aspirations.
The upper floors provided new modern teaching spaces for mathematics and new science laboratories.
The site boasts a multi-functional environment for all visitors, students and staff whilst achieving the sustainable and environmental commitments , such as reduced CO2 emissions and achieving operational energy efficiencies required by the Client.
The design also included new external cladding and a vibrantly coloured entrance pod that signifies the college’s main entrance and seamlessly connects the old and new.
Consideration was essential when designing the new extension with providing a sympathetic interface with the existing structure and minimising disruption to both operational activities during construction as well as ensuring clear access for maintenance and reinforcing the structure to provide a long life span of the building. This was achieved through close collaboration of the Design Team and Client during the project programme.
