GRAYS was appointed by the National Assembly for Wales as civil and structural engineers for the construction of the new 7000m2 offices for the National Assembly for Wales at Merthyr Tydfil.
C D Gray & Associates Ltd was involved from early stages in the development and carried out the site remediation design, highway engineering to access roads and project management services for the advance works carried out by Alun Griffiths Contractors Ltd. On award of the main building contract to Carillion Plc. C D Gray & Associates was retained as civil and structural engineering consultants.
The main building is divided into three major elements. A three storey main entrance block and two further two storey wings. The three storey element has a 70m radius curve incorporated into the design. The building is of steel frame construction with cell-form beams at all floor levels allowing uninterrupted space within the offices. The substructure consisted of a raft type reinforced concrete foundation on vibro-improved ground.
Our services included the structural design and detailing of both substructure and superstructure, together with the civil engineering design of the roads, drainage and external areas within the development plateau.
